Grade 4 2023/24

 Over the past few weeks: -we have been working on their math geometry art projects  -we have been learning about triangles and how to identify them based on angles and sides -we learned how to use a protractor to measure acute, obtuse and right angles -we are learning about voyageurs and the fur trade -we are learning about the scientific method by designing our own experiments with our red wiggler worms -watched some authours read parts of their books on World Read Aloud Day -we are learning how to write paragraphs -presented our readers theater plays for our buddy class -learned about the difference between bullying, mean and rude behavior and how to react to each  

Since we have come back from winter break we have: -had a lot of BLUE days and indoor recesses :( -been working on problem solving and 3 act math tasks -learning multiplication strategies to multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers -reading Wild Robot -doing a readers theater about garbage and recycling -creating informational posters about reduce, reuse, recycle and the impact of our actions -leaning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch -using ozoblockly to code an ozobot to do a beach cleanup  -doing volleyball in gym -making Blackfoot artifacts  -we started vermicomposting -we wrote "What Could Go Wrong" stories

 The past couple of weeks in Room 5, we a have been, -learning about area and perimeter in math -doing brainbashers and solve me puzzles -talking about patterns on a multiplication chart, practicing basic multiplication facts and relating them to division -learning about producers, consumers and decomposers and food chains -we are focusing on Waste, recycling and composting and had a presentation from Green Calgary where students were challenged to build a model of a landfill that could prevent leachate from seeping into the water -working on our social studies research about the Alberta regions and beginning to put our information into a slide show -we used tinkercad to create something to represent our Alberta region (animal, landform, plant, natural resource) and hope to 3d print them next week. -word work/spelling: learning about homophones, words ending with 'le' and how to add 'ing' to different words (double last consonant, drop e or do nothing) -did some fibonac...

 I hope everyone had an enjoyable Fall break.  Over the past 2 short weeks the grade 4 students, -finished our Wishtree novel and wrote a book review -wrote poems created art for for remembrance day -researched peacekeeping -worked on editing skills with our suspense stories -learned about natural resources and products or uses of each.  We also talked about renewable and non-renewable resources. -we are learning about the Fibonacci sequence by looking for patterns in numbers and nature, explaining the pattern, drawing the pattern -we are working with money and a shopping task to practice adding and subtracting decimals -we started the book "The Wild Robot"  -we went to Fort Calgary and learned about some Alberta history

 The past couple of weeks in Grade 4: -we are learning about decimals and fractions (tenths and hundredths) and developing our understanding through art, games, money, models and picture representations. Counting change at home and talking about tenths and hundredths is a great way for kids to practice at home. -in math we learned about Palindromes and looked for patterns  -we went to Telus Spark and did a shadow program where we wrote a script and created a puppet play, some students also dissected owl pellets, lied on a bed of nails and experienced VR. -we began planning suspense stories and have focused on description, hooks and a strong introduction so far -we are making maps of our own islands that need to include a legend, scale, compass rose, capital city and other landmarks -in Social Studies, we are learning about the regions of Alberta and began exploring resources, vegetation, landforms and wildlife of the Parkland reagion -we did a refraction experiment in science ...
