Week of September 25

  Activities from last week and this week: -we started our plants unit in science -Mad Scientist came and taught us about light -The seed survivor truck came -we learned how to take jot notes -we had explore time -we learned about residential schools, had an assembly, had orange shirt day and read 'When I was Eight" and "Walking Together" -we made cards with our buddies that will be sent to senior homes -we made models of plants, labeled parts and explained the function of the parts -we learned about pollination and dissected a lily to find the pistil and stamen -we did guided reading groups focused on the topic of friendship and will be presenting what we learned to the class -we learned about the medicine wheel -we finished our math Problem of the week -we got to experience prodigy math game (boy it was fun!) -we researched and some kids started our bioluminescence slide show -we learned how to round 4 and  5 digit number to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 -we learned...

This week in Room 5: We had an assembly and did the Terry Fox run and got a freezie (YAY) We experimented with flashlights, found transparent, translucent and opaque objects and learned what those words mean We logged into epic books for reading and explored math playground We wrote and typed up our Terry Fox information and displayed it in the outdoor classroom for the Terry Fox run We did Brainbashers mental math We had Explore/Follow your Passion time We met our Grade 2 Buddies We learned about natural and artificial light sources We started a novel called Wishtree We learned about arborists Thursday was Fun Lunch. We reviewed expanded form, word form, and subtraction and did a Problem of the Week REMINDERS: Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences are next Thursday and Friday.  Welcome to our blog! Please check in on Friday's for updated posts that include what the students have been working on in class, upcoming events and pictures.     Last week and this week, we have been working on many team building, cooperative tasks to get to know each other. Some activities include: -creating self portraits -scientific sketching (leaves and plants) -visiting the community garden -learning about Terry Fox -math games focused on place value and strategy -class values and expectations -shadow art and stories -camouflage and capture the flag games during gym -STEM and team challenges like cup stacking and designing a dream classroom -kids vs teacher BOGGLE word making game (the kids won!)
