Feb 28 - March 6

-

 Over the past 2 weeks we have:

-been doing gymnastics with a focus on flexibility, strength and balance (today was our last day)

-practiced basic facts to 12x12 and discussed how multiplication relates to division

-used base 10 blocks to model division with larger numbers (long division strategies)

-explored beginning algebra concepts, explained what the = sign means and balanced equations

-learned about Writing on Stone and made our own symbol stories about a buffalo hunt

-finished our novel "Wild Robot"

-had Mad Scientist visit to introduce our new science unit, Simple Machines

-explored 'gadgets' to observe the parts and how they work

-watched an Evergreen Theatre performance called "Snow White and the Seven Regions"

-learned about trading posts through Minecraft

-had kindness week and read books with our buddy classes

Students will have things to show you at our next Student Led Conferences which will be held on the evening of Thursday March 21 and morning of Friday March 22. More details to come.

 Over the past couple of weeks we have, -been playing recorders in music (Mrs. Hebenton is back!!) -building simple machines including balloon cars and pulley systems -build catapults and had an epic 'knock down the towers with marshmallows' tournament -making Rube Goldberg machines that include simple machines -watched some of the Eclipse on NASA live stream -baked bannock, tried pemmican and drank mint tea (focus on reciprocity, connection to land, Metis culture) -started a social studies timeline focused on the railway, settlers and NWMP -been working on mental math using Kahoot, Math 99 and daily games  -learned about factors and multiples, prim and composite numbers -learned to tell time and solve time related problems -started writing poems using rhyming couplets

Week of October 2

 This week in Room 5   -we our first field trip to weasel head park(we net elder Harley). Ask me about our tree named Gary -half of us finish our plant model and did a self assessment based on the criteria  -we met our other grade 1 buddies and helped them make turkey crafts  -we read more of wish tree  -we did our bioluminescence picture with glow in the dark paint -we talked about cause and effect -we researched about balsam poplars -we are learning basketball in gym and Maya and Rylea taught us a game called bump Upcoming field trips October 23 Telus Spark Nov. 7 Fort Calgary

This week in Room 5: We had an assembly and did the Terry Fox run and got a freezie (YAY) We experimented with flashlights, found transparent, translucent and opaque objects and learned what those words mean We logged into epic books for reading and explored math playground We wrote and typed up our Terry Fox information and displayed it in the outdoor classroom for the Terry Fox run We did Brainbashers mental math We had Explore/Follow your Passion time We met our Grade 2 Buddies We learned about natural and artificial light sources We started a novel called Wishtree We learned about arborists Thursday was Fun Lunch. We reviewed expanded form, word form, and subtraction and did a Problem of the Week REMINDERS: Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences are next Thursday and Friday.
